Hello Learning Differences MOOC-Ed participants!

In the past few weeks, we've learned about three ways in which your students' learning may vary: working memory, executive function, and learner motivation. In unit 5, we take a more holistic approach taking into account the complex nature of the learning profile you learned about in unit 1. We do this by providing a framework you can use to approach and support all of your students.

This unit begins with a simulation in which you can better understand what your students' learning differences feel like, therefore better equipping you to support them. Next, we provide you with case studies of three students and ask you to consider what you would do next if you were their teacher. Finally, we offer a series of resources to provide you with a framework for observing students, leveraging their strengths, and supporting their learning needs. All along the way, we hope you will employ your growth mindset and use asset-based thinking as you support students’ needs.

You can access unit 5 by clicking here or by logging in at go.ncsu.edu/summerld and clicking on the link to unit 5 at the bottom of the page. As always, the previous units remain open in case you need more time to review the material. Personalize your learning experience and use the MOOC as you need in order to meet your learning goals.

Certificates of Completion
Many of you have asked about the requirements for completion. If you complete the course (meeting the requirements described on this page), you will receive a Certificate of Completion for 20 hours of professional development. If you teach in North Carolina, we are able to award 2 CEUs for that effort.

If you are a coach participating in the Coaches Corner modules in units 2, 4, and 6 - you are asked to post a bit more in the forums and to complete a coaching action plan. If you meet these requirements, you will receive a Certificate of Completion for 25 hours (or 2.5 CEUs if you teach in North Carolina).

At the end of the course we will ask if you have met the requirements and would like a Certificate of Completion through a survey we will email out. If you have any questions in the meantime, just reach out.

Also keep in mind that an additional 10 hours or 1 CEU are available to those who pursue each stack of badges. The unit materials and badges will remain open to you for the months to come and we hope you will continue to pursue this great, innovative opportunity!

As always, we hope you will continue at your own pace and in accordance with your learning needs. Units 1 through 4 remain open for future reference and we will leave those discussions open for you to continue to engage.

Change in Login Process
In order to reduce confusion around the login process, the login screen will be changing on Thursday of this week. You won't need to do anything differently, continue logging in using the service you've been using.

We look forward to learning with you - see you in the forums!
